Subdomain or root domain?

Choose a sending domain that fits your existing email setup.

Start with a sending subdomain

Use mail.example.com for app email, especially if example.com already handles business email through another provider.

Compare your options

OptionExample From addressWhen to use it
Root domain · example.comhello@example.comYou want your main domain in the sender address and can coordinate its existing email policies.
Subdomain · mail.example.comhello@mail.example.comYou want a distinct sending identity for your app, separate from business email.

A subdomain is part of a domain you already own; you don't need to buy another domain. You do need access to its DNS settings.

Keep different email types separate

Use distinct subdomains when you send both transactional and marketing email:

Email typeExample domainExample message
Transactionalmail.example.comPassword resets, receipts and app notifications.
Marketingnews.example.comNewsletters and promotions.

This makes the sending streams easier to identify and monitor. It can help manage reputation separately, but doesn't guarantee that issues with one stream won't affect the wider domain.

Match your sender address

For a domain configured as mail.example.com, use an address such as hello@mail.example.com in From. If you want to send as hello@example.com, configure the root domain for that sending identity.

To receive replies at your existing inbox, use Reply-To, such as support@example.com. Adding a sending domain in SendMero doesn't create a mailbox for it.

Add the domain you chose

  1. Open Sending Domains → Add domain.
  2. Enter the root domain or subdomain you want to send from.
  3. Choose its traffic type, then add and verify its DNS records.

Keep records used by your existing email provider. If you choose the root domain, update its existing SPF policy as instructed rather than publishing a second one. For a subdomain, review inherited DMARC protection before adding a new policy.
