Overview dashboard
The Overview page shows what happened to the email you sent in a date range: how much was accepted, how much was delivered, and whether your bounce and complaint rates are in a healthy range. Numbers usually update within a minute of an event. The page refreshes itself every minute while it's open, and the refresh button next to Updated reloads it straight away.
Filters
- Date range: the last 24 hours (shown per hour), the last 7, 30 or 90 days (shown per day), or a custom range of days. You can look back up to 90 days.
- Domains: all your sending domains, or only the ones you choose.
- Timezone: days start at midnight in your workspace's timezone (set under Settings → Workspace). Switch on Show in UTC to see them in UTC instead.
The filters, and the tab you are on, are kept in the page address, so you can bookmark or share a view.
The three tabs
| Tab | What it's for |
|---|---|
| Summary | The headline numbers and how they moved over the range. |
| Bounce summary | Everything about bounces: when they happen, why, and at which mailbox providers. See Find what's failing. |
| Breakdown | Your results cut by sending domain, mailbox provider, bounce reason, SMTP response and deferral reason. See Find what's failing. |
Alerts
When your bounce rate or complaint rate is in the warning or at-risk range, an alerts tag appears at the right end of the tabs (for example 2 alerts). It is red when a rate is at risk and amber when a rate is only in the warning range. Select it to see each alert with its current rate and what to do about it.
Summary tab
Four tiles sit across the top:
| Tile | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Accepted | Recipients of messages SendMero picked up for sending. Underneath, how many of them are in progress, meaning they don't have a final result yet. Test-mode sends are not counted. |
| Delivered | The delivery rate in large type, and the number of recipients delivered underneath. |
| Bounced | The bounce rate in large type, and the number of recipients that bounced underneath. |
| Complained | The complaint rate in large type, and the number of recipients who complained underneath. |
Each tile also shows the change from the previous period of the same length. A thin meter under the Bounced and Complained numbers shows where the rate sits between healthy (green), warning (amber) and at risk (red).
Select the ⓘ on a tile to see its definition, the exact numbers behind its rate (for example "138 of 156 recipients"), the date range, the timezone, and for Bounced the split into hard, soft, block and admin bounces. For the two rates it also shows the healthy and at-risk limits.
Where did your email go?
Under the tiles, this card accounts for every recipient accepted in the range, so the parts add up to Accepted. It is counted from when each recipient was accepted, and shows where they are now:
| Part | What it means |
|---|---|
| Delivered | The receiving server accepted it. |
| Bounced | It failed for good, including mail that expired. |
| Retrying | The receiving server asked us to try again later. We keep trying, and most of these are delivered. |
| In transit | Waiting its turn in the delivery queue. |
| Needs attention | Still no final result more than 24 hours after it was accepted. If this number is not zero, check Activity for those messages or contact support. |
| Rejected | SendMero could not send it, for example because the domain is not verified. Only shown when there is some. |
"In progress" under Accepted is Retrying plus In transit plus Needs attention. Select a part to open those messages in Activity. Because this card counts by when mail was accepted, its numbers can differ slightly from the tiles, which count by when results happened. For very large ranges the card may ask you to choose a shorter range.
What the numbers mean
All counts are recipients, not messages: one message sent to three people counts three times.
| Number | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Accepted | Recipients of messages SendMero picked up for sending. |
| Delivered | Recipients whose mailbox server accepted the message. |
| Bounced | Recipients whose mail could not be delivered, split into hard (the address or domain doesn't exist), block (refused as spam or by policy), admin (stopped by SendMero) and soft (a temporary problem such as a full mailbox). Mail that expired, because the receiving server kept deferring it until retries ran out, counts as a soft bounce. |
| Complained | Recipients who marked the message as spam. |
| In progress | Accepted recipients that don't have a final result yet. |
Temporary failures that are retried later (deferrals) are not a tile. They are listed on the Breakdown tab under Deferral reasons, and most of those recipients are delivered on a later attempt.
How the rates are worked out
| Rate | Formula |
|---|---|
| Delivery rate | delivered ÷ (delivered + bounced) |
| Bounce rate | bounced ÷ (delivered + bounced) |
| Complaint rate | complained ÷ delivered |
In these formulas "bounced" includes expired mail. Delivery and bounce rates only count recipients that already have a final result, so they don't dip while mail is still being delivered. Delivery rate and bounce rate always add up to 100 %.
Results are counted by when they happened. A message accepted just before midnight and delivered just after counts on both days.
Charts
- Volume: accepted (blue), delivered (green) and bounced (red) recipients over time, per hour or per day. Bounced includes mail that expired. Point to a day to see the numbers; select a point to open those messages in Activity.
- Bounce rate and Complaint rate: the rate over time, with dashed lines for the warning and at-risk limits.
Each chart has View as table if you prefer the numbers.
Healthy, warning and at risk
| Rate | Healthy | Warning | At risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounce rate | under 2 % | 2 % to 5 % | 5 % or more |
| Complaint rate | under 0.1 % | 0.1 % to 0.3 % | 0.3 % or more |
Gmail and Yahoo require bulk senders to keep complaints under 0.3 %, and recommend under 0.1 %.
When the bounce rate is high
- Open the Bounce summary tab to see when the bounces happened, why, and at which providers.
- Stop sending to addresses that hard-bounce.
- Don't send to old, bought or scraped lists.
- Use confirmed opt-in so typos never make it onto your list.
When the complaint rate is high
- Only email people who asked to hear from you, and make it clear who the email is from.
- Make unsubscribing easy: a visible link in every marketing email.
- Stop sending to recipients who haven't opened or clicked in a long time.
Who can see the Overview
Everyone in the workspace can see the Overview by default. Owners and Admins can change this for custom roles under Settings → Users & Permissions with the View the Overview dashboard permission.
